In Review

Despite the cold January South Dakota weather, Ag Expo 2009 went well. The exhibition hall was packed, and we even had to turn away 8 new exhibitors.  Thanks to all of you that attended.

  • Thanks to Ford West, TFI who traveled to Sioux Falls to participate in the 2009 Ag Expo “Balancing Risk and Reward in Today’s Economy.” During the session, he provided a keynote address titled “World Fertilizer Supply and its Impact on the U.S. Market.” He also took part in a panel discussion that touched upon several key agriculture issues including the fertilizer supply and demand situation; an examination of land market trends in South Dakota; and a presentation on the role of biofuels in the United States’ energy future.

  • New SDABA Board Members Elected: Newly elected to the SDABA Board of Directors are Kelly Bunde, Eastern Farmers Coop of Garretson (District 2), Gary Ostby, Dakota Ag Coop of Claire City (District 4), Terry Abbott, DuPont of Fort Pierre (Industry Director), and Josh Nuytten, West Central Inc., of Sioux Falls (Industry Director).

  • Officers Elected of SDABA: Jeff Thaler, Winfield, LLC of Beresford was elected President of the Board for 2009. Jim Kanable, Midwest Cooperatives of Philip, was elected as Vice-President for 2009.

  • Thanks to Todd Powell, Carl Johnson, David Clark and Dennis VenOsdel for your service on the SDABA Board.

  • Also, to Russ Daley for your service as SDABA President in 2008!

Midwest Cooperatives Sweeps the 2009 Agronomic Olympics

Midwest Cooperatives and Wheat Growers Teams Sweep the 2009 Agronomy Olympic Challenge: Sixteen teams competed for over $2000 in cash prizes and the chance to earn the title of “South Dakota’s Best Agronomy Team in 2009”

Joining the Winners Circle in 2009 are:

  • First Place: Christi Hand and Art Fishback, Midwest Cooperatives of Pierre and winners of $1000, plus the title of South Dakota’s Best Agronomy Team for 2009.

  • Second Place: Adam Holler and Jon Christensen, Wheat Growers of Yale and Mellette and winners of $700.

  • Third Place Tie: Jim Kanable and Lee Kolda, Midwest Cooperatives of Pierre and Philip plus Jordan Leighton and Hank Vliestra, Wheat Growers of Stickney split $500 in cash!

All teams also received 2009 Agronomy Olympic Jackets. Congratulations!

Raffle Winners

SDABA Pac Raffle Winners: With your help $2,940 was raised for the association’s PAC Fund (Political Action Committee). The winners of the raffle held during AG EXPO for $250 Cabela’s Gift Certificates were: Jeff Dickens; Brad Johnson; Mike Roberts; and Kelly Weisser.
